1. Who we are

broke money (“we”, “us”, “our”) operates afterhours.study and Afterhours (the “Service”). We are based in New Zealand.

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and share personal information when you visit our website, join the waitlist, create an account, or use the Service.

Questions about privacy can be sent to hello@afterhours.study.

2. Scope

This policy applies to personal information we handle about visitors to our website, waitlist sign ups, account holders, and enterprise end users whose organisation has licensed the Service.

If your school or employer provides access through an enterprise agreement, your organisation may also have its own policies. Where those policies apply to data your organisation controls, they may take precedence for that portion of your use.

3. Information we collect

We collect only what we reasonably need to run the Service, keep accounts secure, and improve your experience. Depending on how you use afterhours, this may include the following.

Account and identity information, such as your name, email address, username, password or authentication credentials, and profile details you choose to provide.

Study and content data, such as notes, flashcards, courses, assignments, files you upload, study activity, progress, and preferences you save in the workspace.

Usage and device information, such as pages or features used, approximate location derived from IP address, browser type, device identifiers, log timestamps, and diagnostic data when something goes wrong.

Communications, such as messages you send to support, feedback you submit, and records of emails we send to you.

Billing information. If you subscribe to a paid plan, our payment processor collects payment card or billing details. We receive limited billing metadata (for example subscription status and invoice references), not your full card number.

Waitlist information. If you join before full access opens, we collect the details you submit on the waitlist form, such as name, email, country, and school or university.

Enterprise sign in. If your organisation enables single sign on, we may receive basic profile information from your organisation’s identity provider according to their configuration.

4. How we use information

We use personal information to provide, maintain, and personalise the Service; create and secure your account, authenticate you, and prevent abuse; process subscriptions, trials, and billing through our payment provider; send service messages, security alerts, and, where you have agreed, product updates or marketing; respond to support requests and improve help content; analyse aggregated usage to fix bugs, improve performance, and develop features; comply with law, enforce our Terms of Service, and protect users and the Service; and respond to reports of misuse, including alleged copyright infringement or academic integrity breaches.

We do not sell your personal information.

You should only upload or share study content you are permitted to use. Uploading copyrighted or restricted materials, or using afterhours in ways that breach academic integrity rules, is prohibited under our Terms of Service.

5. AI assisted features

Some parts of afterhours use artificial intelligence to help with study tasks, for example summarising text, generating practice questions, or offering writing feedback.

When you use those features, the content you submit for that request is processed to deliver the result. Do not submit information you are not permitted to share or that contains unnecessary sensitive personal data.

We configure our AI providers to process content for service delivery. We do not use your private study content to train public AI models.

6. When we share information

We share personal information only where needed.

Service providers are trusted companies that host infrastructure, deliver email, process payments, provide analytics, or supply AI processing on our instructions and under appropriate confidentiality and security terms.

Other users may receive information only when you choose to share content publicly, share a link, join a collaborative space, or enable profile visibility. You control many sharing settings in the product.

Enterprise administrators may access account and usage information if your account is managed by an organisation, where that access is needed to administer licences, support users, and meet their policies.

We may disclose information for legal and safety reasons where required by law, court order, or to protect rights, safety, and integrity of the Service.

If we merge, acquire, or sell assets, personal information may transfer subject to this policy or notice to you.

7. International transfers

We primarily store and process data using providers that may operate in New Zealand and other countries.

When information is transferred overseas, we take reasonable steps to ensure it is protected in line with applicable privacy law, including through contractual safeguards where appropriate.

8. How long we keep information

We keep personal information only for as long as needed for the purposes described in this policy, unless a longer period is required by law.

If you delete your account, we delete or anonymise personal information within a reasonable period, except where we must retain certain records for security, billing, dispute resolution, or legal compliance.

Backups and logs may persist for a limited time before they are overwritten.

9. Security

We use administrative, technical, and organisational measures designed to protect personal information against unauthorised access, loss, or misuse.

No online service can guarantee absolute security. Please use a strong password, keep credentials private, and tell us promptly if you suspect unauthorised access to your account.

10. Your privacy rights

Under the Privacy Act 2020 (New Zealand), you may request access to personal information we hold about you and ask us to correct it if it is inaccurate.

You may update many profile fields directly in your account settings, opt out of non essential marketing emails using the unsubscribe link or by contacting us, and request deletion of your account, subject to legal and operational requirements.

Contact us if you have a privacy concern. We will respond within a reasonable time.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner in New Zealand.

11. Cookies and similar technologies

We use cookies and similar technologies to keep you signed in, remember preferences, measure performance, and protect the Service.

Essential cookies are required for core functionality. Where optional analytics or similar tools are used, we aim to minimise identifiable data.

You can control cookies through your browser settings. Disabling essential cookies may prevent parts of the Service from working.

12. Children and young people

The Service is intended for students and learners. If you are under 16, use afterhours only with permission from a parent, caregiver, or school as applicable.

If we learn we have collected personal information from a child without appropriate consent, we will take steps to delete it.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will post the updated version on this page and adjust the “Last updated” date.

If changes significantly affect how we use personal information, we may also notify you by email or in the product.
